Water to Ice and Back

Goal: Observe or describe water freezing and ice melting, and put the changes in order.

For parents: Freezing changes liquid water into solid ice; melting changes ice back into liquid water. An adult manages the freezer, ice and containers throughout. Use only a little water in a freezer-safe unbreakable container, leaving room above it. No heating, tasting or holding ice. Draw the changes if no freezer is available.

Do together

  1. Water before freezing

    You need: A freezer-safe unbreakable container, water, paper and pencil

    With you beside them, your child watches you tip a little water inside the container: it flows. Draw it together. Put the container in the freezer yourself, leaving room for expansion. Without a freezer, draw water and the ice it could become.

  2. Look at the frozen water

    You need: The container on a tray, paper and pencil

    When frozen, an adult brings out the container and gently tips it to show that the solid ice keeps its shape. Observe without touching or tasting. Draw what changed. Leave it safely on a tray at room temperature to watch it melt; wipe spills.

  3. Could we change it back?

    You need: The drawings and a pencil

    Compare the melted water with your first drawing. Order pictures of water, ice and water again. Explain that an adult could freeze this water again. Retell the sequence using freeze and melt. Empty the container afterwards; the activity water is not for drinking.

  • What could flow before we put it in the freezer?
  • What changed when the ice melted?
  • How could an adult turn the water into ice again?
