Watch Small Creatures with Care

Goal: Observe or discuss a small outdoor animal, record a visible detail and choose a way to leave its surroundings undisturbed.

For parents: Minibeasts are small animals such as ants, spiders and snails; they are not all insects. Watch from a distance with an adult. Do not touch, feed, trap or chase them, lift stones or logs, or approach nests. Avoid unknown plants and animal waste. Drawings are a full alternative; wash hands after outdoor play.

Do together

  1. Watch without collecting

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    An adult chooses a safe place to watch a visible small creature without approaching it. Notice where it is and one movement. If none appears, record that honestly or discuss an adult's drawing. Nothing needs collecting, and there is no need to identify a species.

  2. Draw only what we noticed

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw a detail you could see, such as a shell or legs. If a part was hidden, say you could not see it. With a drawing instead, describe its visible features. Explain that an ant, spider and snail are different kinds of small animal.

  3. Leave a place for feeding

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw bees visiting flowers. Explain that bees get food from flowers. Ask what would happen if someone picked every flower there. Draw a caring choice: leave flowers growing and watch from a distance. Do not put out food or try to attract bees.

Talk about it

  • What could you actually see?
  • Which part was hidden from view?
  • Why could leaving flowers help bees?
