Tell a Scene Without Words

Goal: Use controlled gestures and a brief still pose to suggest a scene and a character's possible feelings.

For parents: Mime tells something through movement without spoken words. A freeze-frame is a brief still picture made with the body. Breathe normally and use comfortable poses on a clear, level floor with an adult nearby. Seated gestures or directing an adult are full alternatives. No lifted partners, props or forced expressions.

Do together

  1. Show an everyday action

    You need: A clear space or comfortable seat

    Mime opening an imaginary book and looking at a page. Your child guesses the action, then chooses their own gesture. Keep hands away from faces and movements gentle. They may direct you instead. Discuss which movement gave the clearest clue.

  2. Make a still story picture

    You need: The same comfortable space

    Invent a scene: Sara has found her missing drawing. Choose a small gesture and pause briefly in a steady position while breathing normally. Ask what Sara might feel. Several feelings could fit; the pose alone cannot tell us for certain.

  3. Change one clue

    You need: The same comfortable space

    Repeat the scene, changing one gesture to suggest another possible feeling or event. Pause briefly, then relax. Your partner describes what changed. Swap performer and observer, or direct each other's seated hand movements. No audience or correct guess is required.

  • What changed when you moved your hands differently?
